OVERVIEW

CCL Label is a global leader in packaging solutions, producing high-quality labels and packaging materials for industries such as pharmaceuticals, food & beverage, and consumer goods. In high volume manufacturing environments like CCL’s, every second counts, delays in production lead to increased costs, missed deadlines, and wasted resources. At the heart of CCL’s print production workflow is the Job Setup Report System (JSR), a critical pre-production process that ensures print jobs are correctly configured before machines begin running.

Challenge

Our research began where it mattered most, the factory floor. We spoke directly with managers and printers, the people who relied on the Job Setup Report System every day. What we found was a system bogged down by paperwork, delays, and inefficiencies that slowed production instead of streamlining it.

Supervisors struggled to chase down physical reports for approval, operators spent valuable time handwriting logs, and tracking past reports for audits felt like searching for a needle in a haystack. The solution wasn’t just to digitize the process—it was to redesign it for speed, accuracy, and ease of use.

Key Challenges:

  • Manual Paperwork Delays – etup reports had to be physically filled, transported, and reviewed, creating bottlenecks.
  • Prone to Errors & Loss – Handwritten logs were easily misread, misplaced, or incomplete, leading to costly mistakes.
  • No Centralized Data – Reports were locked in physical files, making audits, tracking, and workflow improvements difficult.
  • High Printing Costs & Waste  – Constantly printing and storing paper logs added unnecessary operational expenses.
  • Reduce costs  – Eliminating paper logs would cut printing and storage expenses.

A digital solution was needed, not just to replace paper, but to eliminate inefficiencies and create a scalable system that streamlined production.

Context

Job Title:
Design Engineer

As a design engineer, I worked alongside my project manager, who oversaw the I.T. system, to break down the outdated Job Setup Log Report system and rebuild it as an intuitive, digital workflow.

Our Goal:

  • Digitize job setup logs – eliminate paper-based bottlenecks.
  • Automate approval workflows – Supervisors could approve jobs instantly, reducing delays.
  • Centralize data storage – All reports would be stored in a searchable database, making retrieval easy.
  • Improve accuracy  – Standardized input fields and real-time validation would eliminate common errors.
  • Reduce costs  – Eliminating paper logs would cut printing and storage expenses.

CRaft

Tools Used: Node.js, Angular, Figma, MySQL

We needed to design a system that balanced automation with operator input, ensuring efficiency without overwhelming users with unnecessary manual entry. Instead of simply replicating the paper form digitally, we streamlined the process, automating what we could while keeping the critical inputs in focus.

Step 01: Fast Job Setup

Once the job number is entered, the system auto-fills the rest — cutting redundant data entry and reducing setup errors.

Operators enter 3 key fields:

  • Operator Name →  Entered manually.
  • Machine Number → Selected from a predefined list.
  • Job Number → Pulled directly from the database, which contained all queued jobs.

Step 02: Highlighting Only What Matters

Paper forms forced operators to re-enter everything. We flipped that:

  • Only essential fields are highlighted.
  • Step-by-step UI confirms sections before moving forward.
  • Easy to go back without breaking the flow

Step 03: Final Review & Seamless Submission

Final review shows a complete digital form before submission. No handwriting, no confusion.

  • Saved directly to the database for tracking
  • Auto-sent to print in the supervisor's standard format

CONCLUSION

At CCL Label, job setup was a slow, manual chore. Operators filled out handwritten forms, supervisors scrambled for approvals, and finding past reports felt like searching for a needle in a haystack. The system wasn’t just outdated, it was a drag on productivity.

With the launch of the Digital Job Setup Report System, everything changed. What once took minutes now took seconds. Operators entered only what mattered, approvals moved instantly, and the paper trail was replaced by real-time digital records.

The Results:
